The 1955 plan to modernise Britain's railways set mass dieselisation in motion. The Southern Region, despite being largely electrified, still needed locomotives which could work away from the third rail.

The Class 33, nicknamed “Crompton”, entered service from 1959. While not the largest loco on the rails, the reliable Sulzer engine packed a punch, propelling the loco up to 85mph. From widespread use across Southern England came keen enthusiasm, and no less than 29 would avoid the cutters torch.
