Best PS2 Games of All Time (And How to Play Them in 2026)

A ranking is easy. The useful part is knowing which of these you can still buy and play today. Every pick here comes with an honest answer on how to play it in 2026.

The PS2 sold 160.71 million units and stayed in production for nearly thirteen years, until January 2013. That is still the best selling console ever made, and it produced the biggest software library any console has had. So a best PS2 games list has a job that a PS5 list does not. It has to narrow more than 3,800 titles down to something you can act on.

This one is organised by what the PS2 was genuinely best at, rather than as a flat countdown. Every pick also carries the answer nobody else prints, which is how you play it in 2026. Sometimes that is a modern remake. Sometimes it is a PS4 rerelease you buy and keep. Sometimes the honest answer is a disc and the original hardware.

Why the PS2 Library Is So Hard to Navigate

Three things stack up. The console ran for thirteen years, so it covers two design eras: early 3D games still working out how a camera should behave, and late-generation titles that look like early PS3 games. It was cheap to develop for and hugely popular, so publishers shipped everything, including a vast tail of licensed tie-ins and budget filler. And Sony ran aggressive budget labels, burying the shelf further in rereleases.

The signal to noise ratio is therefore worse on PS2 than on any other PlayStation. On PS1 you can broadly work through the well-known names. On PS2 those names are a rounding error against the size of the library.

So the availability column below matters more than the ranking does. A great game you cannot buy is a museum exhibit. A great game with a PS5 remake is a purchase decision, which is where the live PS Store discounts feed comes in, because modern PS2 remasters discount hard and often.

The Genre-Defining Giants

These are the games that changed what their genre looked like afterwards, and they are the correct starting point if you have never touched the console.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004) is the one that broke the format open. Three cities, a countryside between them, stats, gang territory and a story that still holds together. It is also the best selling PS2 game ever made, and the Definitive Edition means it is the easiest giant to get playing today.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004) is the most complete game Kojima Productions made on the console, and it is now the best served of the lot. The Delta remake landed on PS5 in August 2025, and the Master Collection carries the original alongside MGS2. Play whichever suits you. Both are legitimate routes and both go on sale.

Shadow of the Colossus (2005) reduced an action game to sixteen boss fights and a horse, and it still has no real imitator. Bluepoint's 2018 PS4 remake rebuilt it visually while leaving the design alone.

God of War (2005) invented the template that most of the 2005 to 2012 action genre copied. It is also the clearest example of the availability problem. The two PS2 entries never made it past the PS3 HD versions, so there is no PS4 or PS5 route at all. If you want to see where Kratos started, that means a PS3 or a PS2. Our guide on whether the PS5 plays PS3 games covers what that restriction actually means in practice.

Resident Evil 4 (GameCube 2005, PS2 port the same year) rewired third-person action for a decade. The PS2 version was the compromised one, so in 2026 the 2023 remake is the obvious route.

The Japanese Output That Defined the Era

This is what the PS2 was best at, and it is the part of the library that ages best. The generation gave Japanese studios enough power for full 3D worlds without the budgets that made the PS3 era so risk averse. Weird, expensive, mid-sized games got made and shipped worldwide.

Final Fantasy X (2001) brought voice acting and a tightly paced linear structure to the series, and Final Fantasy XII (2006) went the opposite way with a semi-real-time battle system and programmable party AI. Both have clean modern rereleases, so neither needs a disc.

Persona 3 (2006) and Persona 4 (2008) established the calendar structure the series still runs on, and both have modern versions: a full remake for the third, an expanded port for the fourth. Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne is the harsher, colder relative, and its HD Remaster is the only way to play it without hunting a disc.

Dragon Quest VIII (2004) is the awkward one. It is arguably the best traditional JRPG on the console and there has never been a PlayStation rerelease, so it stays on original hardware.

For action, Devil May Cry 3 (2005) is still what the character action genre measures itself against, and it sits in the HD Collection. Okami (2006) is Clover's parting shot, slow to start and worth it, with a PS4 HD version that plays on PS5. Onimusha 2 got a fresh remaster in 2025, which makes a mid-tier PS2 action series easier to play now than several of the giants.

Survival horror deserves its own treatment, because Silent Hill 2 (2001) and Silent Hill 3 (2003) sit at opposite ends of the availability problem. One got a full remake in 2024, the other did not. That whole strand is covered in the best PS2 horror games guide.

Underrated PS2 Games Buried by the Library

These are not obscure because they are bad. They launched onto a shelf with several hundred competitors and no algorithm to surface them.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant (2004) is the strongest of the forgotten JRPGs, built on a timing-based combat ring and a tone no other series has copied since. No rerelease exists, which is a real loss.

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System (2003) is a sharp third-person shooter with enemy hacking mechanics a modern studio would build a whole game around. Gitaroo Man (2001) is a rhythm game with a difficulty spike people still talk about. Both are original hardware only.

Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil (2001) is the best 2.5D platformer of the generation and one of the few underdogs with a clean modern route, thanks to the Phantasy Reverie collection. Psychonauts (2005) arrived at the end of the cycle and sold badly, then found its audience a decade later. Beyond Good and Evil (2003) did exactly the same thing, and its 20th Anniversary Edition is the cheapest way in.

Rogue Galaxy and Dark Chronicle are the two Level-5 games worth going back for, and Sony rereleased both on PS4. That makes them the easiest underrated picks on this entire page.

Multiplayer and Couch Games

The PS2 had online play, but its real multiplayer identity was four controllers on one sofa, and that is the part of the library which has aged least.

TimeSplitters 2 (2002) is still the reference point. Its split-screen arena mode, bot configuration and mapmaker were years ahead, and the absence of any modern rerelease is the most requested gap in the console's catalogue.

Burnout 3: Takedown (2004) is the other great loss. Licensing complications have kept it off every storefront, so a disc is the only route. Def Jam: Fight for NY (2004) and SSX 3 (2003) are stuck for the same reason.

Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005) is the exception. The Classic Collection put it back on PS4 and PS5, so the best large-scale shooter of the generation is buyable again.

The Best Selling PS2 Games

Because the PS2 is the best selling console ever made, its charts sit close to the all-time software charts. The figures below are the widely cited PS2 lifetime estimates and should be read as approximate.

GameYearApprox. PS2 sales
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas200417.3 million
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec200114.9 million
Gran Turismo 4200411.8 million
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City20029.9 million
Grand Theft Auto III20018.3 million
Final Fantasy X20018.0 million
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty20017.0 million
Kingdom Hearts20026.0 million

Two things stand out. Gran Turismo 3 was bundled with the console in several regions, which inflates its number against games that had to be bought on their own merits. And the top eight is dominated by two series, which tells you how narrow the mass market stayed even on a library of 3,800 games.

The commercial ranking has a collecting consequence too. The best sellers were pressed in enormous numbers, so they stay cheap secondhand forever, while the games that sold badly are the ones that now cost real money. That inversion is the whole subject of our most expensive PS2 games guide.

Emulation, Briefly

It comes up in every PS2 conversation, so here is the position. PS2 emulation exists and is mature. The only route this site will discuss is dumping discs you already own, and the legality of even that varies by country. We do not name or link tools or sites. Everything in the table above is a legitimate commercial route, which is what the rest of this page is for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best PS2 games of all time?

The consensus giants are Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy X and Okami. Most of those now have a modern remaster or remake on PS4 or PS5, which is the practical reason to start with them.

What is the best selling PS2 game?

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, at roughly 17.3 million copies on PS2 alone. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is second at around 14.9 million, helped by being bundled with the console in several regions, and Gran Turismo 4 is third at around 11.8 million.

Can you play PS2 games on PS5?

Not from a disc, and there is no general backwards compatibility for PS2 discs on PS4 or PS5. What exists instead is a set of individual PS2 rereleases you buy and keep on the PS Store, plus the PS Plus Premium classics catalogue, which rotates and varies by region.

What are the most underrated PS2 games?

Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Gitaroo Man, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil, Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil are the names that come up most often. They were buried by the sheer size of the library rather than by quality, and several now have a modern rerelease.

How many games were released on the PS2?

More than 3,800 titles worldwide, depending on how you count regional exclusives and budget rereleases. It is the largest library any console has ever had, which is exactly why a curated list is more useful here than on any other platform.

Are PS2 games still worth buying on disc in 2026?

For anything with no modern rerelease, a disc and original hardware is the only legitimate route, so yes. Be aware that rarer PS2 titles have climbed sharply on the collector market, so check what a game is actually worth before you pay a listing price.

If you are working backwards through PlayStation history, the best PS1 games and best PS3 games guides use the same availability-first approach. Then open the live sales tracker and check the price history before buying any of these remasters, because they repeat the same discount several times a year.
