Best PS3 Games of All Time, and How to Play Them in 2026

The PS3 is where Sony's first-party studios became what they are now. Here are the best PS3 games of all time, and crucially, whether you can still play each one today and on what.

The best PS3 games matter for a reason that goes beyond nostalgia. That generation is where Sony's first-party studios turned into the studios they are now. Naughty Dog went from Jak and Daxter to Uncharted 2 and then The Last of Us. Santa Monica finished the original God of War trilogy. From Software shipped Demon's Souls, and everything that followed came from it. A PS3 list is really a list of origin stories.

It is also a list with a practical problem attached. A striking number of these games have since been remastered or remade for PS4 and PS5, which means playing them today can be as simple as buying a modern version in a sale. Others never made that jump and are still tied to the original hardware. Below, every game is marked with which of those it is.

Every Pick at a Glance

The last column is the one that matters. Exclusive means PS3 exclusive at the time, not counting later PC or mobile ports.

The PS3 Exclusive Games That Defined the Console

If you only care about PS3 exclusive games, this is the shortlist. These are the titles that gave the console its identity rather than the multiplatform releases it happened to also receive.

The Last of Us (2013) is the obvious headline. It arrived in the console's final months, and it is the game that turned Naughty Dog from an action-adventure studio into a narrative one. If you are working out where it sits alongside its sequel and the remakes, our Last of Us games in order guide lays out the whole timeline.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009) is the more influential of the two. The set piece language that dominated the next fifteen years of blockbuster games, the collapsing building, the moving train, the seamless handoff between cutscene and control, is largely Uncharted 2's. Uncharted 3 followed in 2011 and pushed the spectacle further without landing quite as cleanly.

Demon's Souls (2009) launched to a lukewarm reception in Japan, was skipped by Sony for a Western release, and then quietly became one of the most consequential games ever published. Every soulslike on the modern PS Store traces back to it.

God of War III (2010) closed the Greek saga at a scale the PS3 had no business running. It is a completely different design philosophy to the 2018 reboot, and it is worth playing precisely for that contrast. The full running order is in our God of War games in order guide.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008) was the technical showpiece of the early PS3 years and Kojima's last chapter for Solid Snake. It is also the highest-profile game on this page that never received a straightforward standalone modern rerelease on PlayStation.

Journey (2012) is two hours long, has no dialogue, and still lands harder than almost anything else from the generation. inFAMOUS 2 is Sucker Punch's best traversal work, Killzone 2 and 3 are the weightiest console shooters of their era, the Ratchet & Clank Future games are Insomniac at its most inventive, and LittleBigPlanet 2 turned a platformer into a general purpose creation tool years before that was normal.

The PS3 Games You Can Play Today in a Better Version

This is the practical section. For a large share of the PS3's best games, the correct answer in 2026 is not to hunt down old hardware. It is to buy the modern version, ideally on discount.

  • Demon's Souls was rebuilt from scratch by Bluepoint as a PS5 launch title in November 2020. This is the single biggest upgrade on the list.
  • The Last of Us became The Last of Us Part I on PS5 in September 2022, a full remake rather than a remaster.
  • Uncharted 1, 2 and 3 were collected in Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection on PS4 in 2015, which runs on PS5 through backwards compatibility.
  • God of War III Remastered arrived on PS4 in July 2015 at 1080p and 60fps.
  • Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Journey all received PS4 versions that run on PS5.
  • Red Dead Redemption finally got a PS4 rerelease in August 2023 after thirteen years, playable on PS5.
  • Dark Souls Remastered (PS4, 2018), Mass Effect Legendary Edition (PS4, 2021), BioShock: The Collection (PS4, 2016), Batman: Return to Arkham (PS4, 2016), Ni no Kuni Remastered (PS4, 2019), Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (PS4, 2017) and the Yakuza Remastered Collection (PS4, 2020) cover most of the great multiplatform PS3 games.
  • Grand Theft Auto V and Skyrim both have native PS5 versions, in 2022 and 2021 respectively.

All of those are ordinary PS Store products that go on sale regularly, and the older ones fall very low. Because they are catalogue titles competing with newer releases, a repeat discount of 70 or 80 percent is normal rather than exceptional. That makes them a perfect case for checking price history instead of trusting the badge on the store page. PlatPrices tracks the full history and lowest ever price for each of them across more than 70 regions, so you can see the live discounts and tell a real floor from a routine promotion.

The Ones Still Stranded on PS3

This is the honest part, and the part most nostalgia lists skip. A meaningful chunk of the PS3's best work has no native PS4 or PS5 version at all.

Sony's own back catalogue is the worst affected. Metal Gear Solid 4, inFAMOUS and inFAMOUS 2, Killzone 2 and 3, Resistance 2 and 3, the Ratchet & Clank Future trilogy, Gran Turismo 5 and 6, LittleBigPlanet 2, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Puppeteer and Tokyo Jungle are all in this bucket. Third-party casualties include Portal 2, Dead Space 2 and Skate 3, none of which has a PlayStation rerelease.

Your options for those are narrow and worth being blunt about:

  1. A working PS3 and the original disc or a digital purchase. The PS3 storefront is still live after Sony reversed its 2021 closure plan, though you generally have to browse and buy from the console itself now.
  2. PS Plus Premium cloud streaming, if the title happens to be in the rotation and the service runs in your country.
  3. Nothing. For some of these there is no legitimate route at all, and that is the correct thing to say rather than pretending otherwise.

How the PS3 Playing Situation Actually Works in 2026

Three things are true and they trip people up constantly.

There is no native backwards compatibility. Neither the PS4 nor the PS5 can run PS3 software. The PS3 used the Cell processor, an architecture Sony abandoned, and no PS3 emulator has ever shipped on a Sony console. A PS3 disc in a PS5 disc drive is not recognised at all.

The streaming route is real but limited. The top PS Plus tier streams a selection of PS3 games from Sony's servers. That selection rotates, it is only available in the countries where Sony runs its streaming service, and it needs a solid connection for the whole session because nothing is installed locally. You can browse the current PS Plus Premium lineup rather than trusting any list, including ours, to be current. Note that PS1, PS2 and PSP classics behave completely differently, because those download and run locally.

Original hardware is still the most complete answer, and the least convenient one. We have a full breakdown of all three routes, including what happens to trophies and saves, in can the PS5 play PS3 games.

Before paying for a subscription tier to reach two or three old games, run the numbers. The PS Plus calculator compares the tier cost against what you would spend buying the individual rereleases outright, and buying is often cheaper if your list is short, with the added benefit that you keep them.

Multiplayer, Co-op, and the Server Problem

Several PS3 headliners were built around online play, and a lot of those servers are gone. This changes whether a purchase makes sense, so treat it as a buying check rather than a footnote.

The generation's multiplayer high points were Killzone 2 and 3, Resistance 2 with its eight-player co-op campaign, Warhawk and Starhawk, MAG and its 256-player battles, Twisted Metal (2012), Gran Turismo 5 and 6, LittleBigPlanet 2 with its shared creation servers, Metal Gear Online bundled with MGS4, and Demon's Souls with its asynchronous messages and invasions.

Most of that is offline now. Sony and its publishers have closed PS3 servers in waves over the past decade, and the list of casualties includes MAG, Warhawk, Starhawk, Metal Gear Online, Gran Turismo 5 and 6, the LittleBigPlanet online features and the original Demon's Souls servers. If a PS3 game's appeal was primarily its multiplayer, assume the servers are gone and verify before you buy. Single player content is usually untouched, and in several of these cases the campaign alone still justifies the disc.

Where the PS3 Sits Against the Rest

The PS2 is the biggest and strangest library ever assembled, full of mid-budget experimentation nobody has matched since, and our best PS2 games guide covers it. The PS4 is where the PS3's ideas were refined into polished, high-budget certainties, which is best PS4 games territory.

The PS3 sits between them and is the most interesting of the three for that reason. It is a generation of studios reaching past their limits, sometimes messily. Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls and Journey could only have come from a moment when nobody was certain what the format was supposed to be yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best PS3 games of all time?

The consensus picks are The Last of Us, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Demon's Souls, God of War III, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Red Dead Redemption, Portal 2, Journey, Dark Souls and Grand Theft Auto V. Most of those are PS3 exclusives, and most of the exclusives now have a modern version on PS4 or PS5.

What are the best PS3 exclusive games?

The PS3 exclusives that defined the console are The Last of Us, the Uncharted trilogy, Demon's Souls, God of War III, Metal Gear Solid 4, Journey, inFAMOUS 2, Killzone 2 and 3, Ratchet & Clank Future, LittleBigPlanet 2 and Gran Turismo 5 and 6. Sony's modern first-party identity was built in that generation.

Can you play PS3 games on a PS5?

Not from a disc and not from a local install. The PS5 has no PS3 hardware and there is no PS3 emulator on the console. The only official route is cloud streaming a rotating, region-limited selection through the top PS Plus tier. Full detail is in our dedicated guide on whether the PS5 can play PS3 games.

Which great PS3 games are still stuck on PS3?

Metal Gear Solid 4, inFAMOUS 1 and 2, Killzone 2 and 3, Resistance 2 and 3, the Ratchet & Clank Future trilogy, Gran Turismo 5 and 6, LittleBigPlanet 2, Portal 2, Dead Space 2 and Skate 3 have no native PS4 or PS5 version. For those it is original hardware or, where offered, PS Plus Premium streaming.

Do PS3 games still work online in 2026?

Many do not. Sony and its publishers have closed the servers for a long list of PS3 titles, including Gran Turismo 5 and 6, the Demon's Souls PS3 servers, Metal Gear Online, Warhawk, Starhawk, MAG and the LittleBigPlanet online features. Buying a PS3 game for its multiplayer is risky, so check the specific title first.

Is the PS3 store still open?

Yes. Sony announced the closure of the PS3 and Vita stores in 2021 and then reversed it. The PS3 storefront still works, but you generally need to browse and buy from the console itself, because the web and mobile stores no longer list PS3 titles.

Most of the PS3's best games are one modern rerelease away, and those rereleases are old enough now to discount hard. Check the live PS Store sales and the price history before you buy, because on a fifteen year old classic today's discount is very rarely the best one it has ever had.
